Spinning/Breathing, 2012
Stelarc & WoDThe performance was devised for the Oslo Suspension Symposium 2012 with Havve Fjell and Wings of Desire. Five bodies were suspended with their breathing amplified by wireless microphones stapled to their cheeks. The insertions were done, in position, standing up. Two bodies were counterbalanced on one bar and three bodies were counterbalanced on another bar. Once hoisted up, the bars were turned and the bodies were spun on their axis. The turning and spinning choreography of the multiple bodies was registered by their sometimes synchronized, sometimes arrhythmic breathing. Three cameras were positioned in the space to monitor the suspension process, with an additional hand-held mobile camera. The performance was streamed live to the Internet, but was censored part-way through the performance. The performance was terminated when one of the participants passed out. The actual suspension time was approximately 21 minutes.
